Okay…I’ve seen it! Twice.
The first time with my best friend Morten – he’s not really a Superman fan, but he still loves the first two films and was excited to see it. (Mainly because I’ve been raving about it for two years!!) The second time with eight family members which actually was a wonderful experience. I guess they all wanted to see how I reacted.
The first night as we sat down, I started breathing a little heavier. It felt strange to me, that I was actually going to see the film. I have followed every piece of production news since the production started in July 2004. I have followed all the other failed attempts since about 1997. Now, here I was…sitting in the cinema. It was surreal.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
The opening titles…Very nicely done and a great homage to Superman The Movie. (STM). Although they seemed a little rushed. Some of it was hard to read.
The opening scene with Luthor swindling the old lady out of her fortune was great. That’s the Lex I know!
But the Kent farm scenes were superficial. His return seemed rushed and the scenes with Martha seemed rushed. We should have seen the ship crash! The pacing was off for me and I started getting worried! But I know about the cuts made in the beginning of the film. Apparently WB wanted Singer to make it shorter. It was 3 hours long at that point. So there are 25 minutes missing! But I guess there’s always DVD.
I was unfortunately seated next to a very noisy kid who was asking his mom to translate parts of the film, which annoyed me so much, that I told them both to shut the hell up! They looked very surprised, but it did the trick and suddenly….:
I was sucked into the movie!! I was loving every minute of it! I totally accepted the movie on its own terms! The baseball stadium/plane rescue was AMAZING. It was MAGIC!! When he looks at Lois that first time... Wow. That was great. I accepted the new actors. I totally bought Lois’ kind of bitchy attitude towards Superman. Him leaving was a devastating blow to her and seeing him save the plane, initially made her faint, but when she sees him again, her defences are up. Who could blame her?
Jimmy was comic relief. And he was wonderfully played by Sam Huntington. Perfect casting.
Perry White was a disappointment. I guess since Sam Raimi stole Perry White and put him in the Spiderman films, Singer felt pressured into changing Perry into a more thoughtful character, which I feel is altering who the guy is. Though I loved the scene where Superman saves the falling globe and Perry looks up saying “Great Caesars ghost”!
Lois was another worry of mine, but I bought Kate’s performance. I would have loved to see Rose Byrne is this role. She would have been perfect. But Kate did an okay job. She was hurting cos the love of her life came back. And convincingly so.
Richard White...Like someone said, it would have been so easy to make him into an *$%#! - someone Lois could easily dump at the end of the film. By not doing that, it made the whole "love triangle" seem a lot more believable. No easy answers there.
Jason White...Like most others, I just love that kid! If someone had told me a couple of years ago that the new film would see the son of Superman, I would have demanded the filmmakers sentenced to death, but whaddaya know....It worked and all praise goes to Singer and the writers, for making such a bold move work!
And Brandon...I was very concerned that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the film, because I would be thinking of Chris all the time! But by God...He pulled it off big time! He added a level of vulnerability to Superman, which felt fresh and original. It was hard to watch him being in pain and because of his wonderful performance, the beating by Lex and his goons was very hard to watch. When he fell from the skies, the theatre was dead silent. People were into the film in a BIG way!
John Ottman’s score was wonderful! His job was never an easy one! He sprinkled the Williams cues throughout the film in all the right places and his “Secrets of The Sun” which was played when Superman and Lois flew together, is an absolutely wonderful piece of music. Romantic and heartfelt. Longing and heartbroken. I welled up during that part! Hats of to Ottman.
The plot...I liked it. Let's be honest. The whole film was a unique kind of remake/sequel anyway. I enjoyed it and only a couple of things annoyed me. I would have liked to see more for Superman to do. All he really did was save a few people falling and put out some fire caused by a gas leak. What about all the floods caused by the new continent? Isn't half of America and Europe under water?! Imagine seeing Superman using his super breath to remove giant waves about to hit the cities!! Some more focus on this would have made it more epic and grand.
A lot of discussion has gone into the fact that Superman is lifting New Krypton to space, even though it's partly made of Kryptonite... I must admit that it didn't ruin anything for me at all. Maybe it was indeed mixed with the crystals and therefore not as powerful as real Kryptonite. Then it would make sense. It's not something I'd let ruin the film for me.
There were too many references to STM though. At first it was fun but it started to irritate me after a bit. Some of the dialogue was xeroxed from STM. Especially Lex Luthor! I know that Singer and the two writers are huge STM fans, but next time, make it more your own film.
Hopefully we'll get an extended version of Superman Returns. The original opening scenes with Superman in space, finding remnants of Krypton and seeing the dome from the first film, floating in space, would add weight to the film and fleshing out why he left.
And the Smallville scenes needs to be fleshed out more too. A wonderful actress like Eva Marie Saint shouldn't end up on the cutting room floor and have this little screen time.
To sum up, the film really connected with me. Like I said, I would be brutally honest about this film! It had a lot to prove to me! And thank God it did! It was so much more than a typical summer blockbuster. It had HEART and lots of it! Superman indeed returned!
8 out of 10.

Men hvorfor ikke have lavet ham bare _LIDT_ dybere?
Nice lavet, lettere spaendende.. Dog alt for forudsigeligt..
Hvilket er ret soergeligt da man blot har en foelelse af: "It could have been great, so why did they trample it?"..
