Når “Star Trek Beyond” får premiere senere på måneden, så får “Star Trek”-franchisen sin første åbent homoseksuelle karakter: Hikaru Sulu, rorgængeren på USS Enterprise. Det fortæller skuespilleren bag karakteren, John Cho.

Det er australske Herald Sun, der har talt med skuespilleren.
Han forklarer, hvorfor manuskriptforfatter Simon Pegg og instruktør Justin Lin besluttede sig for at afsløre Mr. Sulus seksualitet.
Det skal ses som en hilsen til den oprindelige Mr. Sulu-skuespiller, George Takei, som selv er homoseksuel og aktiv i bevægelsen for homoseksuelles rettigheder.
I “Star Trek Beyond” er Mr. Sulu og hans mandlige kæreste fædre til en datter. Men det er ikke noget, der gøres et stort nummer ud af:
”Jeg kan godt lide tilgangen. Der bliver ikke gjort noget stort nummer ud af det. Det er der, jeg håber, vi er på vej hen som art. Et sted, hvor ens personlige præferencer ikke bliver gjort politiske,” siger John Cho til Herald Sun.
“Star Trek Beyond” får dansk premiere d. 21. juli.

Jeg tænker først over det, når de føler sig nødsaget til at melde ud de har gjort det. Hvis det skal opfattes som naturligt, så hold dog op med at melde ud at nu gør vi noget specielt.

I de gamle afsnit, der var det en ret stor ting at se f.eks. en sort kvinde i uniform og arbejde sammen med en kaptajn. Dengang var det ret utænkeligt bare at lade en sort og en hvid være kærester, men alligevel lavede man et afsnit hvor jeg mener det var Kirk og Uhura som kyssede. Det var godt nok pga. noget tanke kontrol eller sådan noget, fordi de ville jo ikke selv vælge det... men dengang var det meget banebrydende.
Og desværre er det stadig nødvendigt at lade folk vide at det ikke er unormalt eller unaturligt at være homoseksuel.
